We first met in 2017 while studying for the same Master's degree in Barcelona.
Back then, Enric had a "Cinta del Pilar" hanging from his rearview mirror—an excellent marketing strategy that led Elena to believe she had found a true Aragonese.
By far, the most international destination on our list.
No adaptation period was necessary: Enric was born to hold down the fort at the bar. And, as family tradition dictates, by now he knows the location of the family lands better than his future wife. A top-tier signing!
In 2018, with only 8 months of relationship under our belt, Enric decided to pack his bags and move to Edinburgh to pursue his PhD. What better way to strengthen a relationship than putting a few thousand miles between us?
This marked the beginning of a looooooong long-distance relationship that would last almost 8 years.
In 2019, Elena decided the English Channel wasn't a big enough hurdle and crossed the ocean to start her PhD at Princeton. If we were going to do a long-distance relationship, we were going to do it right.
And so, our American adventure began!
After a pandemic, a minimal loss of hair, and a brief stop in Frankfurt to work at the European Central Bank, Enric finally returned to the Peninsula in 2022. He joined the Bank of Spain, setting up our new base camp in Madrid.
From that moment on, summers would always be spent back home (photo in Gistaín, Huesca).
In 2023, Elena added a new pin to the map, moving to Chicago for nearly a year.
By that point in the relationship, our main goal was no longer to survive the distance, but to accumulate enough frequent flyer miles to buy our own plane.
The beginning of a new era. After 8 years of crossing oceans, in August 2026 we are finally moving in together in Hanover (NH).
We will be visiting Dartmouth for a year while we come to terms with the fact that we can no longer use technology to mute each other while we’re chewing...
It turns out we had to travel halfway across the world to realize we were perfectly fine right where we started. After 10 years, 4 time zones, and countless moving boxes, we’re back to square one.
Starting September 2027, we’re moving back to Barcelona :)
